Why is marketing strategy more important in the AI era?

Marketing and technology have always gone hand-in-hand. From the first printing press, to the introduction of TV, to the launch of the Internet – technology has always delivered new and exciting ways to do marketing better.

Today, two of the technologies impacting marketing most profoundly are AI and intelligent automation.

AI can analyse data, generate insights and content, personalise experiences and optimise decisions. And with the emergence of Agentic AI, it can increasingly plan, decide, adapt, and act autonomously towards defined goals.

Intelligent automation puts that intelligence to work – streamlining workflows and enabling marketing to operate with greater speed, scale, efficiency and consistency.

Together, they make marketing execution easier, faster and increasingly less expensive.

But as AI becomes more capable and autonomous – massively reducing the cost of execution, the value of Original Thinking and clear strategic direction is rapidly increasing.

Why? Give me 5 minutes and I’ll explain.

Why is strategy essential in AI-driven marketing?

If AI can now do so much of marketing, why is strategy more important than ever?

AI has transformed marketing. It can analyse data, generate content, build campaigns, optimise performance and personalise experiences at extraordinary speed and scale.

But capability isn't direction. AI makes execution easier, faster and more efficient, but it doesn't inherently tell you what's worth executing or, for that matter, what will genuinely move your business forward.

This is why you'll see this theme repeated throughout my website, posts and presentations: AI is brilliant at amplifying ideas and executing strategy. Original thinking is where both begin.

What about Agentic AI? Doesn’t that do the thinking and learning?

Yes, and increasingly Agentic AI is moving beyond simply responding to prompts or executing predefined workflows. It can reason through problems, plan actions, use tools, learn from outcomes and adapt what it does next.

But there’s an important distinction between determining how to achieve an objective and deciding which objectives are worth pursuing in the first place.

Microsoft explains it like this: Agentic AI is moving beyond executing predefined workflows to sense, decide, adapt and act autonomously - continuously optimising how objectives are achieved.

But humans remain responsible for setting the strategic direction: “They define objectives, set boundaries, monitor outcomes, and make strategic decisions about capability evolution. They don't do the work. Instead, they govern the system that does… Responsible humans are accountable for outcomes even if they don't execute the work themselves.”

Original Thinking for Responsible Humans

Original Thinking is the strategic foundation that gives your people and AI direction. It’s my way of defining the human insight, judgement, and intent that determines where you’re going, why it matters and what good looks like – which are all delivered through my Growth Marketing and Brand Strategy programmes on the Approach page.

As AI becomes increasingly capable of learning, adapting and acting autonomously, we humans still need to decide:

  • Where should we compete?

  • Why should customers choose us?

  • What should never change?

  • What is our point of view?

  • What makes us distinctive?

  • What are we ultimately trying to achieve?

These are all leadership decisions. A Growth Marketing Strategy, Brand Platform, Campaign Brief or Strategic Roadmap captures your Original Thinking and translates it into clear objectives, principles and guardrails that your people (and increasingly your AI platforms) can work from.

AI can then learn, adapt and optimise how those objectives are achieved. Original Thinking establishes the direction, defines what good looks like, and ensures we're pursuing the things that will achieve our growth objectives.

Put it another way, my approach is based on this idea: AI can increasingly determine how. But Original Thinking is more important than ever in determining where, why and what good looks like.

Now, let’s take a deeper look into how it works and how it’s delivered.

Original Thinking – Find the opportunity

The ideas, insight, and direction AI can't create for you. Original thinking defines where you compete, what makes you distinctive, and the opportunities worth pursuing. It becomes your greatest competitive advantage in an AI-driven world.

Delivered through: Stakeholder interviews, desk research, interactive workshops, agreement on strategic and direction, regular check-ins, and leadership alignment.

Strategy – Set the direction

Strategy translates original thinking into clear direction. It aligns your vision, commercial objectives and growth priorities, creating the confidence to make better decisions before investing in marketing or technology.

Delivered through: Growth Strategy, Brand Strategy, Strategic Briefs and Roadmaps, Go-to-Market Strategies, Audience Strategy, and Customer Decision Journeys.

Brand – Define what you stand for

Brand captures your strategic intent. It defines your purpose, positioning and point of difference, then establishes the principles that guide how your organisation behaves, communicates and creates value.

Delivered through: Brand Platform, Brand Essence, positioning, propositions, commercial narratives and messaging.

Decision Frameworks – Turn strategy into action

We translate the Brand Platform into easy-to-use rules for decision-making. This is not just another brand document sitting on a shelf.

It provides the strategic principles, context and guardrails that enable your people, partners, and AI systems to make decisions consistently with your brand and growth strategy.

This can be extended into AI Governance – to define where AI can recommend, assist or act autonomously, and where we still need real people to review and approve.

Delivered through: Brand and Growth Decision Playbooks, Brand and Messaging Frameworks, Audience Frameworks, Buyer Journeys, Messaging hierarchies and AI-ready brand guardrails.

Content – Create meaning and build relevance

Growth starts with the experiences people have with your brand. Whether it’s a thought-leadership article, a solution playbook, or integrated campaign, your content shapes perception, builds trust and drives the decision to choose you.

Delivered through: Content Strategy, Campaign Concepts, Websites and Digital Experiences, Content and Copywriting, and Sales Enablement Materials.

Campaigns – Connect, engage, build demand

Brand creates strategic clarity. Campaigns activate the strategy. Coordinated growth marketing campaigns connect the right content with the right audience at the right time, to create brand awareness, drive demand and engagement, and build a healthy pipeline.

Delivered through: Integrated Growth Marketing Campaigns, Account-Based Marketing, Campaign Concepts and Creative Briefs, Websites and Digital Experiences, Content and Copywriting, and Sales Enablement.

Sales – Convert the opportunities

Sales transforms marketing momentum into commercial outcomes. With clear positioning, stronger narratives and better-qualified opportunities, sales conversations become more relevant, consistent and effective.

Delivered through: Leadership and Stakeholder Alignment, Integrated Growth Marketing Campaigns, Go-to-Market Strategy, Customer Decision Journeys, Account-Based Marketing Approaches, Sales Enablement, and KPIs and Performance Measurement.

Growth - The ultimate outcome

Growth is the outcome of this entire system. AI amplifies execution. Original thinking determines direction. It all starts with original thinking ensuing you’re aligned and positioned for growth, then strategy, brand, content, campaigns and sales work together to create a growth engine that's scalable, effective, and ready for the AI era.
